Hoekstra Calls for Smaller Goverment

A Michigan congressman who wants to be the state's next governor told area business leaders Monday that the state could be gaining economic ground, but, "the government always gets in the way."
Eight-term U.S. Rep. Pete Hoekstra, R-Holland, spoke to an audience of nearly 100 at the Midland Area Chamber of Commerce's Issues and Answers luncheon, calling the state's current business tax code "anti-growth and economic development," and stressing that the new leadership in Lansing will have to hit the ground running if it expects to reverse the state's plunging economics of the past 10 years.
"We have to send the signal that we're embracing economic growth by streamlining government and reforming the tax code," Hoekstra said. "If we don't get focused on the urgency of economic growth, we'll never get revenue back in the state."
